Most of us toil in the valley of whatever field we find ourselves, very seldom looking up to the sky and the potential we all have for a broader perspective on life and work. Every so often, we have the opportunity to venture up the mountain to see what is on the other side or to be guided there by someone through their words or deeds.
Taking over this column from Buzz Gibbons is a humbling task. Buzz spent years in the trade building a solid reputation as an elevator man who was proficient at his job and before that as an insulator working on some of the larger jobs in the 70’s. I came to know him as the Recording Secretary for the local and its voice here in the pages of The Citizen. Whether you agreed or disagreed with him was immaterial. His articles were always timely, informative, focused on the issue at hand and forceful in their presentation. They were definitely the work of someone at the top of their game.
When health issues finally forced him to take an early retirement from Otis and his Recording Secretary position, he continued to keep Local 17 and the rest of the building trades tuned in to the larger picture through his excellent commentary at the end of these regular articles.
It was with a heavy heart and much trepidation that I very reluctantly accepted the nomination for this position. These were going to be big shoes to fill. How could I measure up?
I want to keep every Elevator Constructor in Cleveland, and those from the other trades that read this column, up to date on what affects us all as members of our individual trades, the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council and North Shore Federation of Labor. If I get long winded, please forgive me, it is just who I am. If it seems like I’m yelling, it is only because I am passionate about the subject. Buzz will be reporting from time-to-time on issues as he wishes. His is an important and passionate voice with a unique perspective and it needs to be heard.
Buzz Gibbons is a giant on whose shoulders we all stand.
